Unfortunately, we learned yesterday that oysters are not available this year. In a memo distributed to all of their customers, our caterer informed us that this year’s heavy rainfall along the Mississippi river, which caused record-shattering flooding, “wreaked havoc on oyster production in the Gulf of Mexico.” The torrent of fresh water resulting from the flooding lowered salinity levels below the critical concentration needed for the survival of oysters. The limited viable oysters that can be harvested are insufficient to supply the demand. Mortality at some public and private oyster grounds is up to 100 percent, which has resulted in state officials to close all areas east of the Mississippi. Sadly, officials say that oyster supplies may be scarce for several years.
After much thought, considerable discussion and deliberation, given the circumstances, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the oyster roast event.
